Stays in Hoarafushi

Hoarafushi is an inhabited local island in Haa Alifu, the northernmost atoll of the Maldives, with its own domestic airport, the country's 13th, inaugurated on 19 November 2020 with a 1,200-metre runway, about an hour's flight from Velana. Maldivian runs a few flights a week, not daily: check its timetable before you buy long-haul tickets. On other days, fly to Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu, about 39 km away, and cross by boat: public speed ferries have linked the two islands six days a week. In the far north, timing matters. The northeast monsoon, the drier season, is felt here first, from mid-December, while the wetter southwest monsoon starts in the south and advances north during May. The stay listed here is Araaik Beach Village, a guesthouse of about ten rooms with a single guest review so far. Local-island rules apply: no alcohol, shoulders and knees covered in the village, swimwear on the designated beach. The atoll's cultural visit is Utheemu, birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the hero of the 16th-century fight against Portuguese rule, whose carved timber palace, Utheemu Ganduvaru, dates from around the early 16th century; it is reached by boat, so ask your guesthouse to arrange the crossing. I would come to Hoarafushi for a slow, flexible trip built around village life; it is wrong for a short break squeezed around a tight international connection.
