Private Pool Villa

A private pool villa in the Maldives is a villa with its own pool on the deck or in a walled garden, either on the beach or on stilts over the lagoon. This page lists 51 resorts that have them, from North and South Malé Atoll, a speedboat ride from Velana airport, to Raa, Baa, Ari, Noonu and the far south by seaplane or domestic flight. They average 9.2 out of 10 across 11,856 guest reviews, and 23 of them also have overwater villas. I choose by the size and position of the pool, not by the word on the booking page. The word covers very different things. A plunge pool may be a few strokes long; Cheval Blanc Randheli in Noonu, about 40 minutes by seaplane from Malé, gives each villa a 12.5-metre pool. Kudadoo in Lhaviyani has 15 residences, all over the water, each with a 44 m² infinity pool, and takes guests from 15 unless the whole island is booked. Ask for the pool's length and position: on an overwater deck it usually sits in full sun, with boats passing the jetty; behind a wall on the beach it stays private, shaded by palms. With children, a pool on your own deck is not automatically safe: there is no lifeguard, and an overwater deck also opens onto deep water. Many Maldives resorts keep under-12s out of overwater villas or ask parents to sign a waiver. With young children I would take a beach pool villa. Anantara Kihavah in Baa gives every villa a pool, beach ones included, and Huvafen Fushi in North Malé gives one to every bungalow. Couples who want no children around can look at the adults-only Mercure Kooddoo in Gaafu Alifu, where 20 villas have a private pool. The transfer shapes the first day. Seaplanes fly in daylight only and the last flights leave between about 2 and 4 pm, depending on the resort and the operator; checked luggage is usually capped at 20 kg, plus 5 kg in the cabin. Land in the evening and you either sleep in Hulhumalé or choose a speedboat resort. In North Malé that means The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, Baros, Oaga Art Resort, Malahini Kuda Bandos and Huvafen Fushi, with OBLU NATURE Helengeli, Jumeirah Olhahali, Grand Park Kodhipparu and Coco Bodu Hithi further up the atoll. South Malé Atoll adds five more speedboat choices: OZEN Reserve Bolifushi, Naladhu Private Island, Anantara Dhigu, SO/ Maldives and Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, adults only and all-inclusive. Raa and Baa are seaplane country. In Raa, JOALI Being, JOALI Maldives, InterContinental Maamunagau, Niva Dhigali and The Standard all sell pool villas. In Baa, alongside Anantara Kihavah, there are Finolhu, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Milaidhoo and The Westin Miriandhoo. Baa is the atoll for Hanifaru Bay, where mantas gather roughly from May to November, with no guarantee on a given day; the bay is open to snorkellers only. Ari Atoll is my choice for marine life away from Baa. In North Ari, Constance Halaveli scores 9.8 from 205 reviews, the highest on this page among resorts with more than 100 reviews, W Maldives sits on Fesdu, and Ananea Madivaru spans two islands joined by an overwater walkway. South Ari, where whale sharks are seen all year, has Nova Maldives, Lily Beach, Radisson Blu Fenfushi and NH Maldives Kuda Rah. In Dhaalu, Sun Siyam Iru Veli, The St. Regis Vommuli, Kandima and Angsana Velavaru, with its InOcean villas offshore, round out the choice by seaplane or domestic flight and speedboat. Further out, the trip gets longer and the islands quieter. Noonu has Cheval Blanc Randheli, Siyam World, Kuredhivaru and Soneva Jani, whose water retreats come with a slide into the lagoon. Kudadoo stands alone in Lhaviyani, JA Manafaru in Haa Alifu at the northern tip, and Sirru Fen Fushi and the JW Marriott in Shaviyani. COMO Maalifushi is in Thaa. In Gaafu Alifu, near the equator, The Residence Maldives, The Residence at Dhigurah, The Halcyon Private Isles and Mercure Kooddoo are reached by domestic flight. My verdict: a private pool villa is right for honeymooners and couples who will spend whole afternoons at the villa, and for families who want a beach pool behind a wall instead of a busy main pool. It is wrong for anyone who plans to dive or snorkel all day, because the pool then sits unused, and for families with toddlers who would take an overwater pool villa. For the biggest pools I would book Cheval Blanc Randheli or Kudadoo; for a short transfer, North Malé; for shade and privacy, a beach pool villa. Coral and shells stay on the island: taking them home is illegal.
