Malahini Kuda Bandos is the smaller of the two and the more unusual. For years Kuda Bandos was the picnic island of Malé's residents, and when it was leased for a resort, the government said local access would be kept. Expect Maldivian families on the beach on some days, which some guests enjoy and others do not. The surf season on the Malé atolls runs mainly from about March to October, during the south-west monsoon. From a small resort here, a day trip to a local island by speedboat is easy to arrange, which I would not try from a seaplane-only resort.
A traveler's takeI would book Centara Ras Fushi for a couple arriving on a late flight who want a house reef they can reach from the beach and several restaurants without leaving the island. I would book Malahini Kuda Bandos for a family, or for a short stay tacked on to a trip, where the 10 to 15 minute boat matters more than seclusion. I would not choose either for a traveller who pictures an empty horizon: planes and boats are part of the view here, and that is the trade-off for being so close to Velana.
