Stays in Mandhoo

Mandhoo is a small inhabited island in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, part of the South Ari Atoll region roughly 104 km southwest of Male. Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives sits on the island itself, while Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and V Villas Maldives at Mirihi lie a short seaplane hop away in the same atoll.

Mandhoo is home to roughly 400 residents living on a strip of land barely 1.25 km long, tucked inside Alifu Dhaalu Atoll in the South Ari region of the Maldives. Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives occupies the island directly, giving guests a rare chance to step from a resort villa toward an inhabited Maldivian community within walking distance. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, spread across two islands joined by a bridge, and V Villas Maldives at Mirihi, set on a slender private island, both sit within the same atoll and share the seaplane gateway from Velana International Airport. Together the three properties cover everything from house reef snorkeling to spa retreats and one of the country's most photographed underwater restaurants.

V Villas Maldives at Mirihi - MGallery Collection

4.9

Overwater and beachfront villas with a vibrant house reef and spa

V Villas Maldives at Mirihi - MGallery Collection offers beachfront or overwater villas in the South Ari Atoll. This resort is family-friendly and provides free WiFi throughout. Guests can enjoy three dining options, a spa, and excellent diving opportunities. The property is known for its clear waters and beautiful house reef, with seaplane access for arrivals.

Overwater Villa
Why guests love it

We picked V Villas Maldives at Mirihi for its size, since it is small enough that our kids never had to walk far between the beach, the pool and the restaurant. The house reef right off the villa kept them entertained without us needing to book a boat trip every day, and the seaplane transfer felt like part of the adventure rather than a hassle. It is a quieter island than some of the bigger South Ari Atoll resorts, which suited us but might feel low-key for families wanting more organised activities.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

4.8

Luxury villas, underwater dining, and two award-winning spas across two islands

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a luxury resort spread across two islands connected by a bridge, offering spacious private villas. It features an all-glass underwater restaurant, two award-winning spas, and a house reef. Guests can enjoy diving and wellness activities, with access via seaplane or speedboat. This family-friendly boutique property provides an exceptional Maldivian experience.

Overwater Villa
Why guests love it

We booked Conrad Maldives Rangali Island mainly for the underwater restaurant, and it turned out to be one of the few times our kids sat through a whole dinner without getting restless, watching fish through the glass the entire time. The two-island layout connected by a bridge meant plenty of space to spread out, with the house reef close enough for casual snorkelling between meals. It runs on the larger, busier side for a Maldives resort, which suited our family but might feel less intimate than a smaller property.

Fiyavalhu Resort MaldivesMandhoo

Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives

4.2

The only resort built on Mandhoo island itself, house reef included

Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives is built directly on Mandhoo island in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, the only one of the three Mandhoo-area resorts actually sharing land with the local community. Guests reach it by a roughly 40-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport, then step into a house reef, a spa and a diving centre all within walking distance of the villa.

Family-Friendly
Why guests love it

We chose Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives specifically because it sits on an inhabited island, and it gave our kids something most Maldives resorts cannot: an actual village to walk through, not just a beach. Between a supervised stroll past the harbour and daily snorkeling on the house reef, the four days there covered more ground, literally, than any all-inclusive resort we had tried before on a separate private island.

What to expect

  • Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives sits directly on Mandhoo island in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
  • Conrad Maldives Rangali Island's Ithaa restaurant serves meals inside an all-glass underwater room.
  • V Villas Maldives at Mirihi occupies a private island only 350 metres long.
  • South Ari Atoll's western waters form part of the South Ari Marine Protected Area, regionally known for whale shark encounters.
  • House reefs at all three resorts give snorkelers direct access from the beach or villa deck.
  • Seaplane transfers from Velana International Airport reach this stretch of Alifu Dhaalu Atoll in around 30 to 40 minutes.

Local tips

  • Book your seaplane transfer as early as you can, since flights only operate in daylight and fill up fast between December and April.
  • Ask Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives about a short walk into the Mandhoo village, since it shares its island with a local community.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen before you fly, since none of these South Ari islands have large shops for last-minute supplies.
  • If you land in Male late at night, plan for a stopover before your seaplane connects the next morning.
  • Verify each resort's house reef entry point before booking if snorkeling straight from your villa matters most to you.
  • Bring a dry bag for the seaplane transfer, since luggage sometimes travels on a separate pontoon from passengers.

Where to stay

Frequently asked

Is Mandhoo itself a resort island?

Partly. Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives sits directly on Mandhoo, an inhabited island of around 400 residents in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and V Villas Maldives at Mirihi are separate private islands nearby in the same atoll, reached through the same seaplane gateway from Male.

How do travelers reach the Mandhoo area?

Almost everyone arrives on a seaplane from Velana International Airport in Male, a flight of roughly 30 to 40 minutes that only operates during daylight hours. Speedboat transfers exist for some resorts but take considerably longer over this distance.

Can I visit the local village on Mandhoo?

Guests staying at Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives can ask the resort about visiting the inhabited side of Mandhoo, since the property and the village share the same island. The other two resorts in this guide sit on separate private islands with no village nearby.

Is a whale shark sighting guaranteed near Mandhoo?

No sighting can ever be guaranteed. Alifu Dhaalu Atoll's western waters fall within the South Ari Marine Protected Area, a region known for regular whale shark encounters, but any outing depends on season, weather and a fair amount of luck.

What is the best season to visit these resorts?

The dry season from December to April brings calmer seas and the busiest resort calendar, while the wetter months from May to November often bring softer rates and, on the atoll's western side, better underwater visibility for diving.

Do all three resorts share the same transfer gateway?

Yes. Fiyavalhu Resort Maldives, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and V Villas Maldives at Mirihi all sit within Alifu Dhaalu Atoll and are reached by seaplane from Velana International Airport, though each resort arranges its own flight booking.
