Meeru splits its island in two: guests at the southern end eat at the Farivalhu buffet, while the northern end has Maalan, an adults-only buffet, plus adults-only bars and pool. That layout is what makes a 284-room resort on the eastern tip of North Malé Atoll work for both families and couples, about 55 minutes by speedboat from Velana. The beach runs for 1.5 km, and there is a 9-hole pitch and putt. Snorkellers get a free dhoni out to the house reef, which surrounds most of the island. I would book it for families and for couples who want space and choice; anyone after a small island where the reef starts at the villa steps should look elsewhere.
